Putting research communities in the driving seat of e-infrastructures

The European Commission has established various pan-European initiatives to develop e-infrastructures to support the work of European research communities. It has been a challenge for these initiatives to find effectiveways to engage with the communitiesin the process of developing the infrastructure services. Too often this engagement has been reduced to the existence of a forum where communities are supposed to give advice on the services being developed, which often has had little practical effect on the development of the actual services. On other occasions, e-infrastructures have been dominated by a limited number of stakeholders – which has sometimes lead to over-representation from a single community or institute. Consequently, although the services that were developed fitted the needs of that particular community or institute, it was subsequently hard to extend those services so as to be of benefit to other research communities with different requirements.

Data services, technology & expertise: the community perspective

Interview with Alberto Michelini, Director of the National Earthquake Center of the National Institute of Geophysics and Volcanology (INGV), Italy EUDAT is primarily designed to provide data services for European researchers (although naturally we want to make the data available for world-wide research, wherever appropriate). We have to address the needs of both researchers and members of the general public who are producing or using very large data sets for research purposes. A typical example of this kind of data comes from the continuous series of observations recorded by our networks of seismic stations over time, or from waveform simulations of earthquakes...

ENES and EUDAT for Climate Change

EUDAT and ENES are working together to provide IT solutions for Climate Change researchers and scientists. ENES is using B2FIND to integrate metadata from the World Data Center Climate (WDCC), which includes some Earth System Grid Federation (ESGF) data. Within ENES, several partners have already established infrastructures for the long-term preservation of data, especially well structured large data collections. However we also need to preserve long tail data (that is, large numbers of small data collections) within ENES, B2SAFE could support this. This collaboration allows ENES to learn how other research communities address the IT challenges ahead. Cooperation in wider contexts is beneficial for all.
