EUDAT Fundamentals

What is the value of EUDAT for your project? How can the EUDAT services support your research data management activities? These and other questions will be answered during the training “EUDAT fundamentals”.

The mission of EUDAT is to enable European researchers and practitioners from any research discipline to preserve, find, access and process data in a trusted environment. EUDAT has built a suite of integrated services, the B2 service suite, that enables the storage, sharing and analysis of research data.

This training is aimed at different kinds of (potential) users of the EUDAT collaborative data infrastructure (CDI). The training provides an overview of the functions and applicability of the services that are part of the EUDAT B2 Service Suite. It will also provide in depth, detailed information on what is required to integrate a service in a research environment (e.g. the application of APIs or fine-tuning middleware). This part of the training is aimed at system integrators. The third part of the training consists of an assessment of the EUDAT CDI based on Data Science competencies. This part of the training is relevant for policy makers and research project leaders. Background information on the three parts of the training is given below.

1. The EUDAT B2 Service Suite

Target audience: people interested to gain a general overview of the EUDAT CDI

EUDAT has built a suite of integrated services that enables the storage, sharing and analysis of research data. The B2DROP service can be characterized as a personal cloud storage service. It is a secure and trusted data exchange service. Another service of the B2 Service Suite is the B2SHARE service to store and share small-scale research data form diverse contexts. The B2SAFE service allows community and department repositories to implement data management policies on research data across multiple administrative domains. The B2STAGE service enables the movement of large amounts of data between data stores and high-performance computing resources. The B2FIND service can be characterized as a simple, user-friendly metadata catalogue of research data collections stored in EUDAT data centers and other repositories.

2. Joining EUDAT services

Target audience: people facilitating the implementation of EUDAT services

Joining the EUDAT services means that a research community contributes resources and becomes part of the EUDAT CDI. For this standardized APIs and web interfaces are available. Different strategies for different usage scenarios are required. Examples are iRODS middleware as part of the B2SAFE service, the API that is available to join the B2SHARE service and middleware to process persistent identifiers as part of the B2HANDLE service. Based on a consultation of the people interested in the training a program will be compiled.

3. EUDAT services and Data Science competencies

Target audience: policy makers, funders, project leaders

Data science is a broad term related to the skills and competencies required to create, curate and use research data. A Data Science competency framework (currently under development) will be presented. According to this framework the ideal data scientist should have competencies in the field of “data analytics”, “data management and curation”, “data engineering”, “research methods” and “business analytics”.  The aim of the training is to present and discuss the data science competency framework in relation to the services in the EUDAT CDI. (This part of the training will be carried out in cooperation with the EDISON project.
