Have you registered for the upcoming EUDAT Conference yet? This year it will be held in Rome on 28-30 October. The conference will provide a great opportunity for everyone who is working with digital data to engage with EUDAT members and other data experts. International e-infrastructure cooperation and collaboration benefits are high on the agenda, with keynotes by Richard Frackowiak (on the Human Brain flagship project), Ewan Birney (on Annotating the Human Genome), Maryline Lengert (on Helix-Nebula the Science Cloud), and a view from across the Atlantic from Bill Michener (on DataONE). Progress reports on a series of Research Data Alliance (RDA) activities and working groups will round up the event.

Common policies and services: a pan-European data infrastructure for all

Joining EUDAT means that data centres can offer valuable insights and services to their users. This includes ensuring that users can easily share their data with their peers in other countries and in return gain easy access to data provided elsewhere. The common policies and services provided by EUDAT are a perfect tool to ensure that a data centre’s infrastructure is compatible with other research data infrastructures. EUDAT and its partners prototype new services that are potentially of interest to national users, who profit from the experiences gained in other countries in evolving national infrastructures. EUDAT provides data centres with a perfect forum to ensure that their efforts are not happening in isolation but in sync with similar efforts elsewhere, for example, it is becoming more and more important to have a strategic approach to data that focuses on data management - such as handling metadata and facilitating the replication of data – rather than just providing storage.

EUDAT Glues Virtual Physiological Human Framework Together

VPH (http://vph-portal.eu) was funded by the European Union (EU) with the goal of making collaborative investigation of the human body possible across all the relevant scales (from the level of molecules through cells and organs to the whole body). VPH is currently using EUDAT services to store data safely and to move it from where it is stored to the supercomputer resources where complex calculations are performed. More specifically, VPH is using B2SAFE to ingest VPH data sets into EUDAT resources for preservation purposes, and also to replicate of our data across multiple EUDAT nodes in order to make it easier to access the data and also make it safer (in case one copy of a particular set of data is lost or damaged).
