EUDAT – the Collaborative Data Infrastructure – has partnered with Research Infrastructures since its foundation 5 years ago, ensuring that the data infrastructure and its suite of research data management services are developed and designed to support research infrastructure deliver to their end users.

Research infrastructures are core enablers of competitive research, development and innovation, advancing the frontiers of our knowledge. They are often, by nature, cross-border and exploitable by multiple disciplines.

Research Infrastructures are also highly data intensive, with more and more virtually enabled access, leading the way to global exploitation.

So where can EUDAT provide support?

EUDAT – the Collaborative Data Infrastructure – is a natural partner for Research Infrastructures as it offers a sustainable, robust, interoperable, secure and trustworthy data infrastructure and a suite of integrated research data management services that can be used to address data management challenges across all scientific disciplines.

The EUDAT B2 services cover both access and deposit, from informal data sharing to long- term archiving, as well as addressing identification, discoverability and computability of both long-tail and big data. In short EUDAT services address the full lifecycle of research data allowing Research Infrastructures to invest their resources in the development and deployment of data services and solutions for their thematic field. In addition to delivering research data management solutions, part of EUDAT’s mission is to disseminate and promote best practice in data management for twenty-first century research.

Why do CLARIN, ELIXIR, EPOS, and ICOS partner with EUDAT?

In the same way that they can have access to much faster high-performance computer systems by sharing resources (for example, through the PRACE project), they can also enjoy much better data management and storage facilities if they share and work together.  And this is where EUDAT comes in. Research Infrastructures’ purpose is to pool resources to provide much better research data “library” services than any of the RIs could afford individually. In other words, EUDAT can be “the engine under the hood” to drive the vehicle for all research communities’ data needs.

How long can we rely on EUDAT to deliver these services?

It is absolutely vital for the research communities & infrastructures to understand that a major facet of EUDAT’s mandate has always been to develop its data services in such a way that the services will last and continue to be available indefinitely. The EUDAT partnership is literally a network of trusted centres – data centres, HPC centres, and research institutions – all closely connected across Europe to offer communities reliability, sustainability and confidence in the longevity of the services. Just last week a 10 year agreement was signed by 18 of these organisations, guaranteeing long term sustainability to communities, infrastructures and their end-users.

In addition, EUDAT relies on the best professional IT management practices in use to preserve data (multiple copies, back-up, and recovery plan). In the unlikely event that a service would draw to a close in the future, EUDAT guarantees to keep data archived and accessible for at least 2 years and will assist in the migration of data to other suitable repositories.

How can you contact EUDAT at ICRI2016?

If you are attending the ICRI2016 event from 3-5 October 2016 in Cape Town, come and visit EUDAT at the exhibition[1] and find out you can get engaged and deliver research data management services to your end-users.
