Europe's leading e-infrastructures invited all researchers, developers and service providers for three days of brainstorming and discussions at the Digital Infrastructures for Research event (28-30 September 2016).

The DI4R 2016 conference was co-organised by EGI, EUDAT, GÉANT, OpenAIRE and RDA Europe, and was hosted by ACC Cyfronet AGH, Kraków's academic computing centre.

The event was designed with research communities in mind and aimed to foster broader adoption of digital infrastructure services and promote user-driven innovation.

EUDAT contributed to the event with two presentations and a training session. The first presentation B2FIND: A Cross-Discipline Metadata Service and Discovery Portal focused on B2FIND, one of the EUDAT B2service suite, which is a unique multi-disciplinary joint metadata catalogue of research data collections stored in EUDAT data centres and other repositories.

The second presentation was about the EUDAT-PRACE collaboration activites focusing on the advantages of coupling Data and HPC resources together.

Finally a full training session entitled "Explore and design your own workflow for safe data replication" which presented and demonstrated data management services developed in the context of EUDAT. In particular, EUDAT’s B2SAFE and B2STAGE services guard against data loss, optimize access for users from different regions, and bring large data collections closer to powerful computers for compute-intensive analysis. To give the attendees deeper insight into these services, EUDAT has introduced the underlying technology, such as iRODS, persistent identifiers and gridFTP, which can generally be used to set up an infrastructure for data management. Use cases from communities employing EUDAT’s services or the underlying technologies were also be part of the training.

"This event represented an important step towards greater collaboration between e-Infrastructures, which is very much required by research communities who want to be able to access network, data and computing resources in a seamless way” said Damien Lecarpentier, EUDAT2020 project director.
