Antti Pursula, Head of EUDAT CDI Secretariat is speaking in the closing plenary of EGI 2022 "Pathways for improved coordination and cooperation among e-infrastructures" together with other representatives of European Research Infrastructures such as EGI, OpenAIRE and GÉANT.
About the plenary
The realisation of coordination and collaboration of the European e-Infrastructures that are responsible for delivering advanced federated services for networking, computing, data processing, discovery, exploitation and sharing across European research infrastructures is paramount to the achievement of scientific excellence through our international scientific collaborations.
For example, in the coming decade the increasing rate of data taking and scarcity of computing resources will require the coordinated provisioning of Cloud, HTC, HPC and scientific applications to deal with real-time data acquisition, efficient data transfer and access, data reduction and calibration of sensors with fast feedback loops from processed data, smart approaches to data processing, simulation and visualisation tools, sharing and access to massive capacity from heterogeneous computing facilities (HTC, HPC, Cloud) and CPU architectures. At the same time the global scientific and social challenges bring the urgency of scientific teams collaborating and sharing data and knowledge at the earliest possible stages of their research. Such scientific collaborations will drive e-Infrastructures to jointly tackle open science policy and service delivery challenges.
The theme of coordination and collaboration is also at the heart of the e-IRG White Paper 2022. e-IRG identified three areas of cooperation: high-level strategy and coordination in Europe, service provisioning and innovation, and sees ‘a clear need for a single e-Infrastructure umbrella forum for community building, high-level strategy setting and coordination for the entire e-Infrastructure. This umbrella forum is not a separate organisation, but a forum in which the user communities and the strategy and coordination bodies for the different parts of the European e-Infrastructure work on a concerted approach.
During the session we will explore pathways for e-Infrastructures to improve cross-infrastructure coordination to jointly deliver and support integrated access policies, service delivery, and overall an integrated environment to better serve the user needs, including aspects like governance, sustainability, and related policies. We will hear testimony from scientific communities on the needs of e-Infrastructure coordination and we will discuss e-Infrastructures governance structures that can help improve their current way they engage and serve users. The ultimate goal of bridging the gaps across e-Infrastructures is to provide integrated user-friendly services addressing their complex digital needs to accelerate their science.
A panel of experts from scientific communities and e-Infrastructures will lead the discussion and the audience will have the opportunity to suggest concrete actions.
