Over 40 participants (such as data managers and data librarians) attended the workshop "How EUDAT services support FAIR data", which took place on 20 February as part of IDCC 2017 in Edinburgh (Scotland).

The aim of this workshop was to explore how EUDAT’s data services could provide support for making data FAIR: Findable, Accessible, Interoperable, and Reusable. The FAIR data principles draw much attention and support, inspiring for instance the European Commission’s Guidelines for FAIR data management in Horizon 2020 (July 2016). Yet putting the principles into practice is challenging, as discussed in the recent DANS-EUDAT-OpenAIRE webinar "FAIR Data in Trustworthy Data Repositories Webinar".

In this workshop we related the FAIR data principles to services in the EUDAT Service Suite and explored how the services can facilitate elements of FAIRness. The workshop participants had the opportunity to experiment with different services:
  • they stored data in B2DROP, EUDAT's personal cloud storage service,
  • they uploaded data to the data repository B2SHARE (Accessible, Reusable),
  • they were among the first users who document data with the semantic annotation service B2NOTE, which will be integrated with B2SHARE (Findable, Interoperable, Reusable).
At the same time the EUDAT representatives collected from attendants’ feedback on how to improve the services.

Additionally, the community representatives attending the event talked about their experiences with integrating EUDAT services into their workflow.

Workshop organisers: Marjan Grootveld (Data Archiving & Networked Services/DANS), Yann le Franc (e-Science Data Factory), Sarah Jones (Digital Curation Centre).
